Hats & Horses: Highlights from the Best Kentucky Derby Party in Kansas

Aaaaaaaaaand the winner of the 151st Running of the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve is…..

Sovereignty!

While Sovereignty won the Derby, we had a few winners of our own at the Foundation’s Hats and Horses event. It was wonderful to see everyone out and sporting their best Derby attire! Judging was done by none other than the ever stylish Shelby Harner, owner of Sugar Creek Boutique in Hutchinson, KS, along with her mother (equally as stylish), Tawnya Harner.

Some notable Hats and Horses wins…

Derby Couple

Southern charm was doubled in the Derby Couple contest, where perfectly coordinated pairs took center stage. Couples dressed in full Derby ensembles—think dapper gents and elegantly styled belles—competed to see who could bring the most cohesive, charming, and photo-worthy looks.

Fancy Hats and Fascinators Contest

From oversized florals to feathered flourishes, the Fancy Hats & Fascinators contest brought the drama in the best way. Guests wowed with elaborate creations that embraced the spirit of Southern elegance and Kentucky Derby tradition. Judging focused on embellishment, creativity, and how well each headpiece embraced the theme—and boy, did they deliver! Think flowers, feathers and flair galore. In short: the fancier, the better!

Bowties and Southern Style

The gentlemen had their turn to shine in Bowties & Southern Style. From seersucker suits and straw hats to crisp shirts and bold bowties, this contest showed off the refined side of Derby fashion. Judges looked for standout style and head-to-toe charm. The men of Hats & Horses proved that Southern sophistication is always in season.

The Derby Belle

Grace, glamour, and a whole lot of Southern sparkle took over the Derby Belle competition. This contest celebrated the full Derby ensemble—from show-stopping hats and flowing dresses to the just-right accessories. Judges looked for ladies who didn’t just wear a look, but told a story with their style. These belles brought their A-game, and then some!

Rowdy Crowd Table

The Rowdy Crowd Table award was all about Derby spirit—and this year’s winner brought it in full force. From cheering during the races to themed outfits and contagious energy, the winning table didn’t just attend the event… they became part of the experience. This crew embraced the party, embodied the fun, and made Hats & Horses even more unforgettable.

Racing Winners

In addition to the fun and fashionable contests, we also had prizes for simulated races and the Kentucky Derby itself!

We had winners from fun simulated races, as well as prizes for the 50/50 raffle from the Kentucky Derby itself!

We cannot thank everyone enough from those who attended and supported Hats and Horses to everyone who helped make it possible by volunteering and donating. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Hats and Horses was the best Kentucky Derby experience in Kansas! This luxury fundraising event set the bar higher than ever before. We had all the classic Kentucky Derby staples including mint juleps and other specialty drinks, contests including best fancy hat or fascinator, and of course, watching the Kentucky Derby! It took place May 3, 2025 at the 1861 Club on the Kansas State Fairgrounds. Following the running of the Kentucky Derby, there was a short live auction featuring a trip to Churchill Downs, a custom-burned whiskey barrel or whiskey barrel table, and a live painting created during the event. After that, attendees continued to enjoy the party with music, dancing, and drinks! All in all, it was an unforgettable party. The best part is all the proceeds go towards the Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation’s mission to further the renovation, construction, preservation and beautification of the Kansas State Fairgrounds!

P.S. Did you hear that all the horses in the Kentucky Derby this year were related to Secretariat??
